Editor and MGG Online Product Development Coordinator Georg Burgstaller will exhibit RILM’s resources at the 41st annual conference of the Major Orchestra Librarians’ Association (MOLA), hosted by the Berliner Philharmoniker from 2 to 5 June 2023. MOLA facilitates communication between professional performance librarians, providing support and resources to over 300 performing arts organizations. Georg will be available throughout the conference to discuss the wealth of information relevant to the modern orchestral world contained in RILM’s digital collections. RILM will participate in the Echos: Sound Ecosystems in Travelogues conference, held in Padua, Italy, from 25 to 26 May 2023. The event will provide a forum for discussions surrounding Echos, the eponymous web application —with an integrated relational database—that was designed and created at the Department of Cultural Heritage of the University of Padua. RILM is one of the partner institutions of this project.

On 25 May, Executive Director Tina Frühauf will participate in a discussion session meeting at 4:15–6:30pm CEST. Frühauf will then give her paper “Travelogues in Context: RILM and the Merits of A&I” on the following day, 26 May, at 12:00pm CEST.

From 12 to 13 April 2023, Répertoire International de Littérature Musicale (RILM) and The Barry S. Brook Center for Music Research and Documentation will present the international conference Global Digital Music Studies at the CUNY Graduate Center, organized by Executive Director Tina Frühauf and Executive Editor Zdravko Blažeković. 

The conference provides a forum for debate across the humanities, arts, and sciences to assess and address how digital music studies can be globally relevant and respond to broader questions of sustainability and resilience. The aim of the event is to inspire new models for generating and disseminating musical knowledge with digital technologies that have the potential to engage and connect music research communities worldwide. 

Tina Frühauf, along with Tim Curtis, UNESCO’s Secretary of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, will deliver the conference’s opening remarks on the morning of Wednesday, 12 April. 

Additionally, several RILM staff members will serve as panel chairs throughout the conference, and some will present their research. On Wednesday, 12 April, at 12:00pm EDT, Editor Mu Qian will present his paper, “Empowering Marginalized Voices Digitally: Decolonizing Chinese Minority Music Research Through RILM Editing”. Later that day, at 5:00pm EDT, PDF Coordinator Luka Douridas will speak on “Marginalia, Mentalities, and the Dilemma of Digital Preservation”.

The conference will conclude with a catered reception, with live music performed by guitarist Federico Díaz, in honor of Dr. Barbara Dobbs Mackenzie’s 30 years of service to RILM, first as Editor, and from 1996 to 2022 as its Executive Director.

New York. — 10 March 2023 — Répertoire International de Littérature Musicale (RILM) releases the third edition of How to Write About Music: The RILM Manual of Style, edited by James R. Cowdery, as an ebook.

The manual addresses a multitude of special problems faced by writers on music—problems rarely solved by general writing guides. It applies an international perspective to matters often handled piecemeal and in ethnocentric fashion: work titles, manuscript sources, transliteration, non-Western theoretical systems, opus and catalogue numbers, and pitch and chord names, to name just a few. Detailed guidelines are provided for the bibliographic handling of standard print, audiovisual, and electronic sources, as well as specialized ones such as program notes, liner notes, and music videos. A chapter on indexing is also included. Throughout, abundant examples illustrate each point.

The first edition (2005) reflected many years of experience and thought, working with a wide variety of terms and concepts from around the world; the second edition (2006), roughly one-third larger than the first, included both revisions and new material. This third edition incorporates numerous updates, many of them reflecting developments in writing and publishing over the past 17 years—not least, those involving the online environment. Unlike the earlier printed editions, it is an electronic edition that will be continuously updated.

“Students, scholars, librarians, critics, and performers will find this third edition of the manual indispensable. It takes into account a bibliodiversity hardly found in similar such ventures and is reflective of RILM’s global mission,” writes RILM Executive Director Dr. Tina Frühauf.

General description:

Répertoire International de Littérature Musicale (RILM) offers internships at its International Office in New York City. RILM publishes RILM Abstracts of Music Literature (along with a suite of other resources), which is widely recognized as the world’s premiere abstracted bibliography on music and related disciplines. RILM was established in 1966 and operates under the joint sponsorship of the of the International Association of Music Libraries, Archives, and Documentation Centres (IAML); International Council for Traditional Music (ICTM); the International Musicological Society (IMS), and the International Society for Popular Music (IASPM). 

Internships at RILM offer unique opportunities to learn about all aspects of our operation, while contributing extensively to our distribution of the world’ s writings on music. Intern projects are designed to benefit both the institution and complement the intern’s own interests, skills, and experience.

Interns at RILM have gone on to enjoy successful careers as music librarians, professors, and other careers. Beyond the academy, an internship at RILM provides valuable and practical technological and research skills that are transferable across a wide range of sought-after jobs.

Intern duties:

• Locate descriptive metadata for differentiated authorities (persons, organizations, works, geographical locations, etc.)
• Add descriptive metadata for differentiated authorities
• Differentiate authorities where needed
• Add links to searchable variants
• Validate entities based on established authorities

Learning objectives:

• Understanding of the functions of descriptive metadata (validation, finding, linking)
• Understanding of RILM’s authority structure and the role of descriptive metadata therein
• Demonstrate judgment in the choice and application of metadata for authorities
• Demonstrate ability to collaborate as a member of the metadata team

Pre-requisites:

• Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate level program related to Information and/or Library Science
• Specialization and/or focus in metadata, library systems, digital libraries, digital collections, or digital curation
• Experience with Excel, databases, and/or MARC
• Enthusiasm for library and digital repository metadata
• Interest in music

Time commitment:

Dates and times are flexible and can be structured according to the intern’s needs, but should cover a period of a minimum of 150 hours. 

All RILM internships are unpaid and housing is not provided. College credit may be granted, but must be coordinated in advance with the intern’s university/college.

RILM Music Encyclopedias has just added two new titles into its continuously expanding collection of historical and current reference texts:

The 2023 additions to RILM Music Encyclopedias enrich the content of the collection with two complementary titles that document the music history and musical life of Southeastern Europe. Both reference works were edited by the distinguished Croatian music historian Krešimir Kovačević (1913–92), who was active as a music writer, critic, teacher, conductor, and editor-in-chief of the Croatian music periodical Arti musices (1973–79). Both works were published by the Jugoslavenski Leksikografski Zavod in Zagreb and represent a collaboration of the best scholars from all six Yugoslav states.

The addition of these titles, which augment the coverage and depth of RILM Music Encyclopedias, emphasizes RILM’s mission to include the music scholarship of all countries and in all languages.
