The ever-expanding full-text compilation of zines that facilitates unprecedented federated searches
What is the RILM Archive of Popular Music Magazines?
The RILM Archive of Popular Music Magazines (RAPMM) is a digital collection of independently published popular music magazines and fanzines that are not easily available in libraries and archives. At launch RAPMM will bring over a hundred of these publications together in one place, with front-to-back issues of titles scanned directly from their sources and made available in digital form. The RAPMM interface will be designed to preserve each publication’s unique identity and integrity, allowing readers to engage with the content individually and browse entire publications or search for specific subjects across all publications. Each year new titles will be added to the collection.
Languages and Countries
In line with RILM’s global mission the content of RAPMM spans multiple countries and languages— currently from Australia, Canada, Colombia, Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
The zines in RAPMM cover a wide range of popular music genres, including punk, rock, indie music, post-punk, grunge, hip hop, women’s music, world music, psychedelia, noise, alternative music, jazz, and country music. There are articles on the history of musical movements and their relation to politics, society and social movements, underground and subcultures, stylistic shifts, and feminism; interviews with widely recognized and fairly unknown artists at different stages of their careers; band profiles; and album reviews and history of record labels.
